Review:The Power of Kindness and How Can I Help?

Hello there!

Today I have a paired book review. I paired The Power of Kindness by Piero Ferrucci and How Can I Help? by Ram Dass and Paul Gorman. I paired these together because I had to read both books for a class for university.

I preferred The Power of Kindness (3 stars) over How Can I Help? (2 stars) because How Can I Help? was quite a dry book. It was organized in a more confusing format and it wasn’t written in a very enticing way. The Power of Kindness was organized by trait, i.e. Empathy, Kindness, Sense of Belonging, etc.

I gave both books quite low ratings, although I may have enjoyed it more had I not read them together and for a class. I felt reading both together was too much since they have just about the same material, in different words.

I would recommend The Power of Kindness for everyone, but I don’t think I would recommend How Can I Help? to anyone because it isn’t as accessible and it doesn’t capture your interest as well as The Power of Kindness.

That’s all for now! Until next time!

Allison

Books I’ve Read for Class Lately

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. I’ve been completely swamped with coursework and applications lately. Plus, it’s almost the end of the year and unfortunately I had to lower my goal of 50 books down to 34 to stay on track during the year. I still have 4 more books to reach my goal, but I’ll try to push through a couple today and tomorrow.

Anyways, I made an unwritten rule for myself that I could count books I read for class, but I wouldn’t necessarily review them unless I really enjoyed it.

This is really just an update post since I haven’t reviewed any books lately, so here are some books I recently read for class:

No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky

I really enjoyed No Exit. I thought it was funny that a couple days after I read it, there was the Twilight Zone marathon on Thanksgiving day. I was watching “Five Characters in Search of an Exit” and without knowing the title of the episode, I realized that it was a No Exit-inspired episode. The episode was also inspired by Six Characters in Search of an Author, which I previously hadn’t heard of until I read about the episode on Wikipedia. I inserted the episode if you’d like to watch it.

Crime and Punishment was really hard to get through. I mean, I probably would have enjoyed it had it not been so long and drawn out. I realize it was all important to the plot and all, but it was really hard for me to get through the book. It just wasn’t my cup of tea.

If I don’t get a chance to post an update or a review before the new year, I hope y’all have a great New Year’s and enjoyed your Christmas or Hanukkah or other holiday!
